Small can be very beautiful. I only have to look at my wife and daughter to appreciate that.
Similarly, small weddings can be very beautiful and generate big results. In May, I photographed one of the smallest weddings of my career – two dozen people or so, and most of the day was spent at the family home. The home, by the way, was far from small but that’s another story.
Despite the diminutive size of the wedding, I produced twice as many photographs as normal. At first, I couldn’t figure out why. At face value, there was less (fewer people, fewer interactions) to photograph. On reflection, it occurred to me that while there were fewer people to concentrate on, it meant that there were fewer distractions and interactions between the guests were more obvious. Rather than hidden in a cluster of people, guests were in full and easy view. It was also easier to switch from one moment to the next.
And it also helped that the people involved were very outgoing – lots of great emotion, gesture and affection. Wonderful stuff for documentary wedding photography.
The backdrop wasn’t too shabby either. A lovely mansion in Co. Cork.
I really enjoy photographing weddings, but this one was very special and will stay with me for a long time.
Here’s a selection of my personal favourites from the day..
